This famous image is one of Russia's finest and most ancient treasures. Dating to the 12th century, it survived the Mongol invasion and first appeared in Moscow in the 16th century. Based on the style, scholars believe it may have been painted in Novgorod, and likely would have formed part of the Deësis (Supplication) row on an ancient iconostasis.
The large eyes and loving expression of the Angel, with perhaps a hint of a smile, has made this icon one of the most loved and treasured icons in the world.
The original icon is approximately 15x19 inches. Purchase a 16x20 for a near exact reproduction of the original!
