Vladimir Grygorenko

Vladimir Grygorenko, born in Ukraine in 1965 and raised in a non-religious family, initially studied mechanical engineering and pursued secular painting while searching for the meaning of ultimate beauty. Discouraged with modern art’s focus on self-expression and novelty, he turned to Orthodox iconography, where he discovered a deeper, tradition-rooted beauty centered on God rather than the artist. Though not yet a believer, his early icon work led him to the Orthodox Church, where after a period of reflection he was baptized in 1991. With little formal guidance available after years of Communist suppression, he taught himself through study and experimentation before eventually training under renowned iconographer Archimandrite Zinon. After years of work in Ukraine and Russia, he moved to the United States in 2000, where he has since created church murals and icons, been ordained a Subdeacon, and continues to teach and accept commissions. His work reflects a conviction that iconography reveals eternal truth and profound beauty, offering a spiritual alternative to the relativism of modern Western culture.
