Description

The Holy Martyr Longinus was among the soldiers who crucified Christ. When he witnessed the darkness and the earthquake, he made his famous confession, "Truly this man was the Son of God."

According to tradition, Longinus was also stationed at the Lord's tomb and witnessed the Resurrection. Coming to believe in Christ, he was baptized and left the military service. He instead became a preacher, together with two companions. He traveled to Cappadocia, where his eyewitness account won many converts. The Jews persuaded the authorities to have him arrested, and he was beheaded. His feast is celebrated on October 16.

The ancient icon comes from the vast treasures of Mount Sinai.
