Description
The Mother of God has long been associated with Moses' burning bush, which held God but was not burned up. This icon is a symbolic representation of this idea. The Theotokos is surrounded by the faces of the Cherubim and Seraphim. In her hand is a ladder, a symbol from the Old Testament vision of Jacob, representing that she was the means by which God came down to earth.
