Description

Saint Theodore was born in Constantinople in the year 759. He entered the monastic life at a young age, and by age 35 he had been ordained a priest and became the abbot of the monastery. He later left this monastery and joined the Monastery of Studium (or Studion), receiving the surname of "Studite".

Living in the Iconoclastic period, Theodore was a zealous defender of the holy icons. He was exiled three times for his boldness.

Theodore and his brother, Saint Joseph the Hymnographer, together composed almost the entire book of the Triodion, which is the foundational liturgical book of the Lenten season in the Orthodox Church.

On November 11, 826, a Sunday, he received the Holy Mysteries and began chanting Psalm 118 on his bed. (This Psalm is chanted at the Orthodox funeral service.) The other monks joined him, and after verse 93, "I will never forget Thy statutes, for in them hast Thou quickened me," he gave up his spirit. His feast is commemorated on November 11.
