Saint Dionysius was born in 1547 on the island of Zakynthos. He entered the monastic life at age 21, and became a priest a few years later. Eventually he became Archbishop of the Aegean. Even during his lifetime he was regarded by many as a living saint, and he was renowned for his gifts of miracle-working and the compassionate ability to forgive others. He fell asleep on December 17, 1622.
It is interesting to note that after the September 11 attacks and the collapse of the World Trade Center destroyed the Church of St. Nicholas, the only objects that were recovered unharmed were a cross and a small paper icon of Saint Dionysius.
