Description
The holy New Martyr Dionysios was a monk of Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos. In 1822, he was sent to Crete with the holy Belt of the Theotokos admidst an epidemic that was ravaging the island.
A revolution had broken out on the island against the Turkish authorities, and Father Dionysius was arrested. When he refused to convert to Islam, his head was stabbed, but he refused to yield. So on Clean Monday (February 13) he was hanged.
This Martyr and Confessor was glorified by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 2000. His feast is celebrated on July 31.
In the icon, Saint Dionysius holds a Cross, signifying his martyrdom, and the reliquary that holds the Belt of the Theotokos.
