Description
As an image of great suffering, this icon presents the great sorrow of Christ’s followers after His death by crucifixion. Present in this scene (from left to right) are the grieving women disciples, Mary the Theotokos, John the Theologian, and Joseph of Arimathea. Each display their love for their Lord and lamentation in a unique manner, some by holding the Lord’s body in reverence and tenderness, others with upraised arms or faces as if seeking an answer from heaven. All the while the dark tomb looms behind, the place from which Christ will come forth in glory in a few short hours.
