Description
As is recorded in the Prologue of Ohrid by Saint Nikolai of Ohrid and Zhicha, the icon of the Lord Jesus Christ “Not made by Hands” is a miraculous story of love, endurance, and faith. Below is a quick summary.
During the time of Christ’s ministry on earth, there was living at Edessa a leprous prince named Abgar. Hearing of the wonders accomplished by Jesus in Israel, Abgar sent an artist named Ananias to Jesus for the purpose of painting His portrait and to deliver a letter of supplication that Jesus come to Edessa to heal him. However, Jesus earthly ministry was committed to the Jews, and only after His death would His disciples “go… and make disciples of all the nations” (Matthew 28:19, Orthodox Study Bible). His passion was also approaching rapidly, so He did not have the time for the painter to make His portrait. Instead, Jesus took a towel, put it to His face, and then gave it to Ananias. Jesus then told the painter that on giving the towel with the imprint of His face to Abgar, the prince would be healed almost entirely, except for a small patch to be healed later by a disciple He would send. All occurred as the Lord prophesied, and Abgar was finally healed when the disciple Thaddaeus came to him.
Over the centuries, the original cloth was copied many times in icons such as this, painted by the contemporary Russian iconographers Roman and Anna Davidovskiy. May this wonderful icon be a source of strength and a reminder of God’s care and healing mercy for all.
