Description

Contains ~20g of hand-made beeswax-coated wicks and one cork float for use with any appropriate glass votive lamp and olive oil.

Instructions for Use

  1. Position the cork float with the metal side up. This shields the cork from the flame; using it upside-down could result in a fire.
  2. Insert a wax wick into the hole from the top. You can adjust the length of the flame by moving the wick up and down (extinguish the flame before doing so).
  3. Bend the metal tabs upward. This allows you to grasp the cork float without getting oily fingers.
  4. Fill your glass votive with any vegetable oil (olive oil is traditional and works best) and carefully place the cork float on the surface. Light the wick and enjoy the flame.

The wicks will last for several burning sessions. When the wick begins to disintegrate, grasp the bottom of the wick and pull it through. Wipe the excess oil and ash from the metal and insert a new wick.

Safety Tips

  • Do not burn lamps unattended. Children should not use fire unattended.
  • Keep flammable items away from the lamp, especially above it.
  • Refill the oil in your vigil lamp when one-quarter to one-third of the oil is used up. This will prevent the glass from overheating and causing unpleasant odors.

    Bright and long lasting

Posted by Ruth Gore on Apr 29th 2017

Long, long ago - perhaps thirty years or more ago - I purchased a plastic version of this. A disk of plastic floated on a thin layer of oil on top of water. Small holes let the oil wick up to a short, beeswax coated wick. Very similar in principle. I saw these and loved the organic nature of the cork. So much better than plastic! After a few failed attempts from not realizing how to get started, I got it burning beautifully. There are two metals tabs on top that you bend upward to grasp so your fingers don't get oily handling the cork. But there are also two small tabs underneath where you feed the wick through. You need to insert the wick and then push the tabs beneath in that center opening to grasp the wick and keep it from sliding right on through! I placed mine in a glass votive holder and got many, many hours of burn time before I extinguished it with a regular bell shaped candle snuffer. I added a few drops of essential oil to my mine for a light scent. Be careful, the glass of the votive holder gets hot! I hope to enjoy these for decades, just as I did my old ones.
