Description
This historic 11th century icon of the Vision of Saint Romanos commemorates the moving story of this saint’s devotion and gift.
Born in the 5th century, this Eastern saint desired to write music for the Church. Serving as a new singer in Constantinople, jealous fellow choristers pushed him to sing before he was prepared. He went to the Theotokos in prayer for help, and in a vision she answered him. Offering him a scroll to eat, he swallowed it and immediately woke up. Full of excitement and gratitude, he returned to the church to sing an original composition with praise to God and the Theotokos. For the rest of his life, St. Romanos would be renowned for his beautiful music devoted to God.
