As King David once sung, "The queen stood at Your right hand in apparel interwoven with gold, and adorned and embroidered with various colors" (Psalm 44:10, Orthodox Study Bible). This icon presents just such a vision, with the Theotokos and her Son Jesus Christ in the robes of royalty, her cheek pressed close to her Child in the tender Γλυκοφιλούσα—Glykophilousa, or “sweet-kissing”—tradition.
