Theotokos Enthroned (XIIIc) Icon - T181

1 Customer Review Write a Review

This beautiful icon was painted in Constantinople in the mid-to-late 13th century. As in the famous Theotokos of Vladimir icon, the Theotokos here has a very soft face with a tender expression, drawing the viewer into her loving protection.

It is a type of the "Guide" (Hodegetria) icon genre, as the Theotokos gestures with her hand, guiding the viewer to her Son. Icons of this family were important in the life of Constantinople, as regular icon processions took place throughout the city with the icon of the Theotokos featured prominently.
