Saint Nicodemus (or Nikodemos) was a Pharisee and a member of the Sanhedrin. He is known as "the Secret Disciple" because he visited Jesus at night to discuss his teachings (John 3). He became known as a disciple of Christ, but not openly.
As a member of the Sanhedrin, he tried to use his influence to sway his colleagues away from judging Jesus hastily, arguing that he should be allowed to answer charges before being subjected to judgment (John 7).
After Jesus' death, Nicodemus provided significant quantities of myrrh and ointments for his burial.
Saint Nicodemus was thrown out of the Sanhedrin for his belief in Christ. According to tradition, he lived with Saint Gamaliel (Acts 5) until his martyrdom.
He is commemorated on the Sunday of the Myrrhbearers, together with Saint Joseph of Arimathea and the Myrrh-bearing Women; and also on August 2, together with Saints Stephen, Gamaliel and Gamaliel's son Abibas.
