Saint Eugene was one of the five companions who were martyred for Christ under Diocletian. For his part, Eugene's tongue was cut out, his hands and feet were cut off, and he was finally beheaded. He suffered about the year 300. His feast is celebrated on December 13. This Russian icon of the saint was painted about 1900.
