Description

The holy prophet Joshua, the Son of Nun (in Greek, Jesus of Navi), was called by Moses to survey the Promised Land. He urged the people to trust in God as they prepared to enter the land. He was chosen to succeed Moses, and after Moses' death, Joshua led the Israelites through the Jordan River on dry ground. Through his powerful prayers, the sun was stopped in its course and the Amorites were defeated. He governed Israel until his death at the age of 110 in the 16th century BC.

In this 14th century Athonite fresco, he is depicted as an old man, yet still holding his warrior's sword.

Joshua (Jesus) means "the Lord saves," and our Lord Jesus Christ was named after him. His feast is celebrated on September 1.
