Description
This beautiful 16th century Deësis (Supplication) row features the distinctive bright blue of northern Russian icons of the 16th century. The figures feature a distinctive Novgorod influence in their style. This icon was likely originally painted for a home chapel, or perhaps a small church or side altar.
In the center Christ is enthroned as Pantocrator (Almighty) and Judge. The Theotokos and Saint John the Forerunner are closest to him. Further out are the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, and on the ends, Saint Basil the Great on the left and Saint Nicholas on the right.
