Description

Serving as a visual companion to St John Climacus' renowned "The Ladder of Divine Ascent", this icon depicts the strenuous climb of spiritual growth and is a type of the heavenly ladder as seen by Jacob. This particular icon was painted in the 12th century at the Monastery of Saint Catherine at Mount Sinai, where Climacus himself lived as a monastic and even served as abbot. Following the written structure of his book, the ladder is shown with 30 rungs or steps, each having a specific chapter that they correspond to. Above the ladder angels are shown giving encouragement to the striving souls while demonic spirits attempt to drag the climbing men from their path to God. And above all, Christ waits with open arms ready to accept those who strive to serve Him to the end.

This icon can be an intimidating image to many, with the embattled Christians holding with all their strength to the true and narrow way as they ward off the foes that surround them. But there is an image of joy seen as well in Christ's reaching to those who come to Him.

Whether you are in the season of Lent in the year of the Church or struggling in the day-to-day worries and cares of life, may this icon serve as a beacon of hope and encouragement in your own climb.

Top notch quality and accurate color tone!

Posted by Joel Morris on Mar 19th 2018

I am completely satisfied with the quality of the icon I received! I opted for the best quality offered (masterpiece mounted/protective wax) and feel it was well worth it. The icon I ordered is The Ladder of Divine Ascent--which is my favorite icon--so I'm thankful to have it be created with such excellence. Also, the coloring is perfectly to my liking, which is a complaint I have with many other icon producers--the tint often feels too brown or too yellow. Legacy Icons seems to know exactly how to reproduce true to the original icon.

A haunting and somewhat stark image

This icon is somewhat stark . Souls being pulled and lured away from their paths . I chose it this icon to remind myself of what is at stake

    Ladder of Divine Ascent Icon

This icon is stunning, but more importantly has been an invaluable aid to my prayer life as I read and contemplate The Ladder of Divine Ascent by St. John Climacus.
