This famous Hagia Sophia mosaic features Christ, the Theotokos, and Saint John the Baptist in a Deesis (Supplication) scene. The Lord Jesus is enthroned while his Mother and Forerunner pray in behalf of the world. The mosaic was completed in the 13th century, and replaced an earlier mosaic which was beneath it.
The Hagia Sophia iconography is some of the most beautiful in the world. Uncovered in the 20th century for the first time since the 15th century when the 1500 year old Constantinople (Istanbul) church was converted from a mosque into a museum, today the iconography is in danger as nationalist Turks push to convert the building back into a mosque. Legacy Icons offers this reproduction of its iconography from some of the highest-resolution photography available of this icon, that it may survive in some form regardless of what happens to the originals. May God save our Christian heritage!
This Deesis is the single most moving Icon I've ever seen. I stood in front of it for perhaps half an hour at the Hagia Sophia in 2006. The reproduction does it justice and is a wonderful icon but a good reminder to pray for the churches and Christians in Turkey.
We purchased a Masterpiece Mounted XL icon. It is very well made. We saw this in person several years ago. This is a good image of it.
