Christ's Crucifixion and Nativity Icon (Grygorenko) Icon - F425

In this rare icon, Christ’s earthly ministry is shown in its beginning and end: His birth to the Theotokos and His death on the cross. Presented as a two-part icon, the scenes of Christ’s nativity and crucifixion are set side by side. At a first glance these scenes seem opposed in their message—life on one hand and death on the other. However, there are several key links between the two. First is the myrrh given by the magi at Christ’s birth, symbolizing His death to come and a sign of mourning. The second is the cave in which He was born, which is a type of the tomb He would be laid in. Lastly, the Theotokos and the angels are present at both events—in rejoicing and wonder at Christ’s birth and sorrowful awe at His death.

Painted by the hand of Vladimir Grygorenko, this icon’s harmonious color scheme and simple figures give a sense of peaceful wonder at the greatness of God’s grace and love for mankind, even to the ultimate gift of “His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16, Orthodox Study Bible).
