Description
When Jesus was a youth 12 years of age, he went with his Mother and Saint Joseph to the Temple. They left him behind by mistake, and three days later, they found him in the midst of the elders. This event is recorded at the end of Luke chapter 2, and it is read on the feast of the Circumcision of Christ on January 1.
This beautiful fresco depicts this scene. While the Gospel records that Christ was listening and asking questions, nevertheless, in the icon Christ sits on the seat of authority, holding a scroll that represents the teachings of the Prophets. The priests and elders surround him, marveling as they hold up their hands in astonishment, not knowing from where he received his wisdom.
The scene is also known as the Finding in the Temple, Christ among the Doctors, and the Disputation in the Temple.
