Description
The Apostle and Evangelist Matthew (also named Levi) was the brother of James Alphaeus. He was a tax collector until he was called by Christ. He was the first to write a Gospel, and he wrote in Hebrew. The theology of his Gospel is aimed at the Jews, and repeatedly shows how Christ fulfilled prophecy and was the Messiah of Israel. Matthew preached in many places, but won the crown of martyrdom in Ethiopia. His feast is celebrated on November 16, and again on June 30 with the Twelve Apostles.
This icon is from the Holy Doors of the Iconostasis at Saint Nicholas Cathedral. In it, Saint Matthew is shown writing the beginning of his Gospel, with the words: “The book of the origins of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham...” (Matthew 1:1).
Icon courtesy of Saint Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral in Washington, DC. A portion of the sale of this icon is given to the Cathedral to support their ministry.
