Description
This popular icon tells the story of a certain young man who, despite his sinful way of life, kept a prayerful devotion to the Mother of God.
One day, he prayed before the icon of the Theotokos as he was leaving his house to commit a sin. Suddenly, blood began to flow from wounds that appeared on his hands, feet, and side. He cried out to our Lady, "Who has done this?" She miraculously replied from the icon, "You, and all sinners, crucify my Son anew." At that moment the youth came to his senses and prayed desperately for mercy. Through his repentance, he received the "unexpected joy" of forgiveness.
This icon is a reminder of our need for sincere repentance, and also the mercy that awaits sinners who turn away from their wicked ways.
It was painted in Russia in the 19th century. An interesting case of an "icon within an icon," Christ is depicted as a child as usual, but He is wearing the scarlet robe of His Passion, a stark reminder of His Crucifixion for our sins.
