Description
Throughout the centuries, women in the pain of childbirth have found immense comfort in the intercessions of the Theotokos who gave birth to Our Lord Jesus Christ. This ancient icon is especially venerated by expectant mothers praying for a successful delivery, although childless mothers may also find strength and courage in its depiction of Christ and His mother.
The blessed Virgin holds up her hands in the orans position of prayer. Her face reflects her inner spirit of dispassion as she gives birth to Christ God. Unusually, her head is uncovered, perhaps emphasizing the special place this icon has for women. The Lord is shown in her womb, His fingers forming the letters ICXC: "Jesus Christ".
Appropriately, the feast of this icon falls on December 26, being the day after Christmas and the feast of the Synaxis of the Mother of God.
