Description
The hodigitria (guide) genre of icons features Christ sitting on the Virgin's lap. Her hands point to her Son in a gesture of humility, guiding the viewer to look to Him.
This particular icon is part of the Comnenus mosaic at the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. The stunning image was uncovered in the 20th century, after the ancient church was changed from a mosque into a museum.

The Marian Icon That Really Speaks To Me.
I have loved Icons from a very early age. I was a UMC Minister for 8 years until they kicked me out of the denomination for getting those above me to acknowledge the Real Truth of Biblical Standards. I became a Roman Catholic at the Easter Vigil of 2014! When I found Legacy Icons on the web, I was instantly drawn to This Marian Icon with The Christ Child. As The New Eve and The New Ark of The Covenant. I am learning more about Who Are Holy Mother is now and has always been My Mom! I lost my earthly Mom on June 13,1976 8 am Sunday morning and ever since my heart has been broken, it is My New Mother Mary that has aided me in helping to put my heart back together.

Gorgeous
This is one of my favorite icons of the Theotokos. The detail of the mosaic glass and her piercing gaze are captivating and edifying. Like many icons, it took a few days, but this icon has now become a cherished and enriching addition to the home prayer corner.
