Description
This 18th century Russian icon portrays the synaxis (assembly) of the holy Archangels. Including the well-known Holy Michael and Gabriel, and Raphael from Scripture, it also includes three other archangels known from Holy Tradition–Uriel, Selaphiel, Jegudiel, and Barachiel. One of the nine ranks of bodiless beings, archangels serve along with angels in close proximity to the saints, communicating God’s grace and messages to them.
The feast of the Archangels and Bodiless Powers is celebrated November 8.
An angel is a messenger of God, and a being which has stood before God and praised Him from a time before human comprehension. We cannot fully grasp what an angel's exact nature is, but we can understand an angel's function on earth. In icons, angels—especially the high-ranking Archangels—are depicted in an earthly form. All the angels are dressed as humans, in clothing accented with gold, the color of holiness and Heaven.
