Description
This icon depicts the scene at the tomb on the morning of Pascha, with the angel in white robes showing the Theotokos and Saint Mary Magdalene the Lord's grave clothes and empty tomb.
The 16th century icon was painted by the master iconographer Theophanes of Crete, depicting the style of early post-Byzantine iconography. It is housed in the iconostasis at the Stavronikita Monastery on Mount Athos.
This powerful icon shows the truth of the Resurrection through its eyewitnesses, and it is an important image to meditate upon in our churches and homes.
