Description
Saint Rastislav was the second Prince of Great Moravia (today part of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary), reigning from 846 to 870. During his reign, he sought to free Moravia from the dominion of Eastern Francia under King Louis the German.
After an unsuccessful war in 855, Louis sent Frankish priests into Moravia to attempt to bring the land under the sway of the Latin-speaking West. Rastislav in response invited Saints Cyril and Methodius to preach to the Moravians in their own language, and the brothers translated the scriptures and service books of the Orthodox Church into the Glagolitic alphabet.
In 864, Louis attacked again and succeeded in making Moravia a vassal of Eastern Francia. Rastislav remained as prince until he was deposed by his nephew in 870. Rastislav was blinded and imprisoned in a Bavarian monastery until his death later that year.
Saint Rastislav was glorified by the Church of the Czech Lands and Slovakia in 1994, and titled a Confessor who suffered for the Orthodox Faith. His feast day is May 11.
