Description
Saint Philoumenos was born in Morphou, Cyprus, in 1913. At the age of 14, he and his twin brother entered the monastic life in Cyprus, and at age 20 departed for Jerusalem. There, Fr. Philoumenos became a priest and was raised to the rank of archimandrite (a high-ranking monastic priest).
In 1979, Fr. Philoumenos was assigned as the guardian of the Monastery of Jacob's Well, the site of Christ's conversation with the Samaritan Woman, located near Nablus in the West Bank.
The residents of the monastery reported suffering verbal abuse by Israeli settlers amidst religious tensions in the area, but Fr. Philoumenos endured in his duties. On November 29, 1979, a grenade exploded inside the monastery, and the saint was found dead with a severe hatchet wound, struck down as he was apparently fleeing the damage.
The beloved Fr. Philoumenos was mourned deeply, but his attacker was not found until three years later, when police identified a certain mentally ill Orthodox Jewish man. He was institutionalized.
In 2009, after thirty years of popular veneration, Saint Philoumenos was glorified by the Church of Jerusalem with the title of "New Hieromartyr." His relics were found to be partially incorrupt. His feast is celebrated on November 16/29, the date of his martyrdom.
