Description
Saint Cyprian served as bishop of Carthage in the Roman province of Africa (in modern Tunisia). He was baptized late in life, but his conversion was radical and swift. Because of his great zeal, he was ordained a deacon, then priest, then bishop within only a year or two of his baptism.
As bishop, he struggled against heresy, especially concerning lapsed Christians who fell away under persecution. In this controversy, extremists on one side believed the lapsed could never return, while others believed the lapsed could freely return to communion. Saint Cyprian advocated for a moderate path that would allow the lapsed to return to communion after a reasonable penance, and his view was adopted by a council of bishops.
Saint Cyprian suffered under persecution, and refusing to renounce Christ, he was beheaded on September 14, 258.
In the icon, he holds a scroll containing one of his most famous quotes, from The Unity of the Church: "No one can have God as Father who has not the Church as Mother."
His feast is celebrated on August 31 by the Eastern Orthodox, and on September 16 by Western Christians.
