Description

Saint Cassiani was a nun and eminent poet who lived in the 9th century. She established a convent in Constantinople, and excelled as a theologian and musician, composing hymns for her nuns.

Dozens of her hymns endure in the liturgical life of the Orthodox Church to this day, including some of the most-loved hymns of Holy Week. The "Hymn of Cassiani" about the sinful woman (Luke 7:36-50) sung on Holy Wednesday and the Canon of Holy Saturday, including "Do not weep for me, O Mother," are among her most well-known compositions.

Her feast is celebrated on September 7.
