Saint Brigit of Ireland Icon - S267

Product Description

Saint Brigit (also spelled Brigid or Bridget) was an Irish abbess of the convent of Kildare-Kil Dara, which means Cell of the Oak. She was well-known for her generosity and kindness, and for the many miracles she worked for those in need. Together with Saint Patrick, she is known as a pillar of Irish Christians. She reposed in peace about the year 525.

Her feast is celebrated on February 1. In the icon, she is is holding a Saint Brigit's Cross woven from reeds. This symbol is probably a Christianized version of an earlier pagan symbol.
