Description
This icon is a beautiful Byzantine portrayal of the Old Testament Prophet Jonah. Called to prophecy the imminent destruction of the wicked Assyrian empire, Jonah famously disobeyed God and fled across the Mediterranean Sea. After being caught in a storm, thrown overboard, and swallowed by a great fish, he miraculously survived for three days in the fish’s belly and sang God’s praises. Returned to land, he reconciled to his prophetic calling and won a respite for the Assyrians. His story marks parallels to other passages across the Scriptures, particularly in its foreshadowing of Christ’s three-day residence in Hades. Handcrafted in Legacy Icons’ woodshop with quality materials, this icon faithfully depicts the prophet receiving and giving his message from God. Also spelled Jonas, the Holy Prophet Jonah’s feast day is celebrated on September 22.
