Description
This depiction of the Throne of God is often found in icons of the Last Judgment, but can also be seen by itself in a simplified form, as in this icon.
The blue circle surrounding the Throne is known as a Mandorla. This represents transcendence and the highest divinity, which will be evident to all at the Last Judgment. The Throne itself is depicted with a red cushion and a footstool, which is referenced many times in the Psalms and elsewhere in scripture.
The Throne belongs to Christ, who will pronounce the Last Judgment; but as He has not yet returned, He is not present. Sitting on the Throne are the Gospel and a dove representing the Holy Spirit, both of which are “placeholders” for Christ in the world while we await His Second Coming. His royal crown is also present, waiting for Christ to put it on as the divine Ruler.
From the Throne proceeds a flame of fire, after Daniel 7:9: “A fiery stream issued and came forth from before Him.”
Display this icon in a prominent place in your home and be reminded to live a life faithful to Christ, Who is coming to judge the world. Whether we witness His Second Coming in our lifetime, or are among those raised from the dead, each and every person will stand before His Throne one day. While He tarries, let us use our time to repent and strive for holiness, that we may be found worthy when He sits upon that Throne.
