Description
During the reign of Caesar Augustus, our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ was born of the Virgin Mary in the town of Bethlehem. Refer to the Gospels of Matthew (chapters 1-2) and Luke (chapter 2) for the account of the Lord's birth in the flesh. The feast is universally celebrated on December 25.
This beautiful and touching icon depicts the Holy Theotokos cradling and kissing her Son, the Lord Jesus, as He lies in the manger. This depiction is based on the "Sweet Kissing" (Glykofiloussa) genre of icons of Christ and His Mother. The ox and donkey represent the Jews and the Gentiles.
The fine details throughout the icon—the shining stars, the detail on their garments, the sweet softness of the faces—make this a loving and tranquil image that makes the Christmas season.
