Description
This 19th century Russian Old Believer icon features the Guardian Angel and several other saints: St. Aquilina the Virgin Martyr, St. Basil the Great, and Sts. Gurias, Samonas and Abibus (Habib). They are portrayed standing at the ready to quickly intercede with Christ, Who is depicted in heavenly clouds giving His blessing to their intercessions for the faithful.
Although angels are unbodied persons, in God’s grace they communicate to man throughout Scripture and Holy Tradition with the bodies of men, albeit glorified and powerful. One of the nine celestial hierarchies, angels are the closest to people and have interacted with them throughout history. This icon is a reminder of their roles in our faithfulness and ongoing protection in this life.
