This late 19th century icon depicts the twelve Great Feasts of the Orthodox Church, with the Resurrection at the center. It is painted in a simplified "Academic" style typical of central Russia at the time.
Uniquely, this icon depicts the Feasts in chronological order, rather than liturgical order. Starting in the upper left corner and going across by row:
- Nativity of the Theotokos
- Entrance of the Theotokos Into the Temple
- Annunciation to the Theotokos
- Nativity of Christ
- Presentation of Christ in the Temple
- Theophany (Baptism of Christ)
- Entrance of Christ Into Jerusalem (Palm Sunday)
- Transfiguration of Christ
- Ascension of Christ
- Pentecost (depicted as the Hospitality of Abraham, "the Holy Trinity")
- Dormition of the Theotokos
- Exaltation of the Cross
These Great Feasts are the key events in the history of our salvation, and especially the life of our Lord Jesus Christ. They are the highest points of the church year, celebrated with great joy.
The gentle features and soft colors make this icon a favorite for families and homes, and is also suitable for display in chapels and churches for the Feasts.
