Description
This historic Byzantine icon depicts the Archangel’s Michael response to Saints Florus and Laurus’ prayers in aiding them in their work with horses. As patron saints of horses and horsemanship, these saints–who eventually were martyred in the 200s–figured heavily in ancient tradition. This icon commemorates the role that angels play in the lives of humans and even animals.
All angels in icons are dressed as humans, in clothing accented with gold, the color of holiness and Heaven.
The Archangel Michael is the warrior of God, and in any given instance of heavenly warfare is likely present fighting for Him. In icons, Michael can always be identified by his soldier's attire and often by the sword he wields. In this icon above, we see Holy Michael as the archangel who intercedes and cares for God’s people.
