Description
After the life-giving death of Jesus, Joseph of Arimathea asked for the precious body to give a dignified burial. Pilate granted his request, and the body of Jesus was taken down from the cross.
In the center of the icon, Christ is being taken down by Joseph while Mary the Theotokos in sadness cradles Him in her arms. The Apostle John is present holding the Lord's hand as the women disciples shed tears round about the central group, amazed and bewildered to see the incarnate Author of Life dead as a lifeless corpse. Below, another man removes the nails from Jesus' feet with a metal instrument. In the rocks beneath the Cross is a skull, which has a double meaning: firstly, the hill itself was called Golgotha, "the place of the skull," and secondly it represents the skull of Adam who was banished from the garden of life to die in exile.
