Description
This icon by Bulgarian iconographer Georgi Chimev is a simple but powerful depiction of Christ's sacrifice and victory over sin and death. Standing by the Cross are the Theotokos and Saint John, the beloved Disciple, who mourn the Master's death.
According to the Orthodox understanding of Christ's Passion, the dead Savior is depicted not as crumpled and defeated, but serene and triumphant. The skull and crossbones at the foot of the Cross further accentuate His victory over the ancient enemies of mankind: sin, death, and the evil one.
