Description
This beautiful 9th-century mosaic from the dome of the Basilica of Saint Praxedes in Rome features Christ Pantocrator ("Almighty") being upheld by four archangels.
To us at Legacy Icons, this evokes an image from the Cherubic Hymn: "That we may receive the King of All, Who comes invisibly upborne by the angelic host." The language of this hymn, as Fr. Patrick O'Grady notes, reflects the practice of soldiers carrying a newly-crowned emperor on the tips of their spears as a sign of their loyalty. So we must be with Christ, our King!
