Description
In this fresco from Decani Monastery, we see our Lord's miraculous work for the ten lepers, as recorded in Luke 17. Under the Jewish law, the men were unclean and had to live apart from the community to protect others from suffering a similar fate. When Jesus came by, they cried out for mercy. He commanded them to show themselves to the priests, and they would be cleansed because of their faith. They did so, and they rejoiced to return to their families.
Only one of the men, a foreigner, returned to give thanks. This has a typological significance to the spread of the Gospel to the Gentiles after the Ascension, but it also teaches us the simple lesson to always be grateful to God for his gifts.
The story of the lepers is read in the Orthodox Church on occasions of thanksgiving, particularly in North America on the Thanksgiving holiday. The story and the icon teach us to have gratitude to God, and to always have a thankful spirit.
