Description
This unique Byzantine icon depicts the Archangel Michael in his role as warrior and interceder for the Church. In the traditional style of the 17th century, he tramples down death (the old man) while preserving the soul of the faithful in his left hand, holding it aloft to heaven. This icon is a vivid reminder of the role that Scripture and Holy Tradition give to angels in their care for humans both in this life and in the transition to the next.
Michael description: All angels in icons are dressed as humans, in clothing accented with gold, the color of holiness and Heaven.
The Archangel Michael is the warrior of God, and in any given instance of heavenly warfare is likely present fighting for Him. In icons, Michael can always be identified by his soldier's attire and often by the sword he wields. In this icon, we see Holy Michael as the archangel who intercedes and cares for God’s people.
