Description
An angel is a messenger of God, and a being which has stood before God and praised Him from a time before human comprehension. We cannot fully grasp what an angel's exact nature is, but we can understand an angel's function on earth. In icons, angels—especially the high-ranking Archangels—are depicted in an earthly form. All the angels are dressed as humans, in clothing accented with gold, the color of holiness and Heaven.
The Archangel Michael is the warrior of God, and in any given instance of heavenly warfare is likely present fighting for Him. In icons, Michael can always be identified by his soldier's attire, his armor, and the sword he wields. Also, Michael is frequently clothed in some shade of red. The color red can symbolize power, war, blood, and sacrifice: all appropriate to the angel who is engaged in warfare. His liturgical hymns refer to him as "the Commander of the bodiless hosts."
This icon, painted by Reniassance era master iconographer Theodoros Poulakis, is an allusion to the defeat of Satan in Revelation 20. The Archangel Michael is a powerful saint, whose intercessions can help us overcome the power of evil in our lives.

Beautiful - slightly different than expected
The background in the online photo seems to have a gold-leaf sheen, but the Masterpiece mounted icon we received looks more mustard-color and matte. Perhaps Classic mounting on fine paper would have been better. Also, a front edge was slightly bent and marred, but this minor. Overall, a very powerful image of St. Michael.

This icon was mailed and received in a timely manner. It was well protected without excess packaging. The icon is beautiful and as pictured.

Beautiful, but slightly disappointed
This painting of St. Michael by Poulakis is magnificent and powerful, but the online image seems to have a background with more of a gold-leaf sheen than ours which looks more mustard-colored and matte, perhaps because I ordered the Masterpiece mounting which is printed on canvas. Maybe the Classic mounting on fine paper would be different. Also, the icon arrived with the front bottom edge flattened and a bit marred, as if it had been dropped, but it's only a slight flaw. Overall, a beautiful icon of this powerful Archangel and Saint. --- Legacy Icons Response: Our icon reproductions do not use actual gold leaf, so all prints are from photos. The image shown on the website is exactly the same image which is printed to make your icon.

Incredible Quality
I received the Poulakis Icon of Archangel Michael recently and could not be happier. The quality (Classic Mounted Icon) is unparalleled. There is no doubt from the look and feel of the icon that this is an heirloom piece and one which will be passed down in my family for years to come. I appreciate the care instructions included with the packaging and the effort which went into making this icon. It was well packaged, and arrived promptly to Canada. I will certainly purchase from Legacy Icons again!
