Description
This stunning Slavic-style icon depicts the Archangel Michael in his role in trampling the church’s foes as seen in Revelation 20. The vivid colors and figures of this traditional 18th century icon remind us to remember that “we fight not against flesh and blood” and that Christ has “overcome the world.” Holy Michael, chief of the bodiless powers of heaven, is shown riding a magnificent charger while spearing the evil one with his right hand. He rides, holding aloft a copy of the Gospel in his left hand while simultaneously sounding forth this final victory through a celestial trumpet. Like the Apocalypse of St. John itself, this icon captures the deep symbolism and truth of through these awe-inspiring images and reminds us to be faithful to our own allegiance to Christ, Lord of Hosts.
The Archangel Michael is the warrior of God, and in any given instance of heavenly warfare is likely present fighting for Him. In icons, Michael can always be identified by his soldier's attire, his armor, and the sword he wields. Leading the armies of God, he is mentioned throughout the Old and New Testaments and church tradition as the preeminent warrior against the forces of darkness and rebellion.
