Description
This historic Byzantine icon depicts Saint Michael as he fulfills the prophecies of the Apocalypse of St. John in Revelation 20. Portrayed on horseback, he carries a spear that he holds triumphantly over an opening to the abyss or lake of fire. He bears a Gospel in the same hand while swinging a censer in the other, all while sounding forth Christ’s victory through a prominent trumpet. Greek lettering surrounds the different parts, each reminding Christians of its day the inevitable victory. Today, this icon is a reminder to continue to be faithful to our own allegiance to Christ, Lord of Hosts.
The Archangel Michael is the warrior of God, and in any given instance of heavenly warfare is likely present fighting for Him. In icons, Michael can always be identified by his soldier's attire, his armor, and the sword he wields. Leading the armies of God, he is mentioned throughout the Old and New Testaments and church tradition as the preeminent warrior against the forces of darkness and rebellion.
