Description
This contemporary Byzantine icon of the Archangel Michael depicts him in his role as warrior and intercessor for the church. He holds aloft a flaming sword in his right hand and in his left carries an orb bearing the Greek letter chi (X), the first letter of Christ’s name and symbolic of the authority delegated specifically to him regarding the church. He is depicted in elaborate detail wearing breastplate and in his traditional colors of scarlet and blue. This icon is a faithful reproduction of the original by American iconographer Athanasius Clark, one of many from the Legacy Clark Collection.
An angel is a messenger of God, and a being which has stood before God and praised Him from a time before human comprehension. All angels are dressed as humans, in clothing accented with gold, the color of holiness and Heaven.
The Archangel Michael is the warrior of God, and in any given instance of heavenly warfare is likely present fighting for Him. In icons, Michael can always be identified by his soldier's attire, his armor, and the sword he wields. Also, Michael is frequently clothed in some shade of red. The color red can symbolize power, war, blood, and sacrifice: all appropriate to the angel who is engaged in warfare. His liturgical hymns refer to him as "the Commander of the bodiless hosts." He holds a flaming sword in one hand, a reference to the angel who guards the Garden of Eden in the book of Genesis, and an orb in his other hand, symbolizing his authority as the supreme Archangel.

Wonderful as a set
I purchased this icon along with the other Clark icons which go with this specific set. I have them all displayed on my icon wall, and with the uniform art and form, they add a special detail and balance which I was looking for in my own little church at home. I highly recommend this set.
