Description
The Apostle Andrew "the First-Called," was the brother of Saint Peter. He had been a disciple of Saint John the Baptist, but went to follow Christ when Saint John called Him "the Lamb of God," becoming the first disciple. After the Lord's ascension into heaven, Andrew preached in many places and throughout Asia. He was crucified on an X-shaped cross, which is prominently depicted in this icon.
Saint Andrew’s feast day is celebrated on November 30, and again on June 30 with the Twelve Apostles.
The blue and white saltire, known as Saint Andrew’s Flag, is also depicted in the lower left of the icon. This version is used as the ensign of the Russian Navy, dating back to 1712.
Icon courtesy of Saint Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral in Washington, DC. A portion of the sale of this icon is given to the Cathedral to support their ministry.
