Description
This exquisite 19th century fresco is from the Church of St. John the Baptist in Kratovo, Macedonia. It depicts the Angelic Host of Heaven of archangels, cherubim, and seraphim, from the visions of Ezekiel. The iconographer captures the glory and splendor of these three orders of bodiless beings in their constant praise of the Trinity and their message of worship to people.
Although angels are unbodied persons, in God’s grace they communicate to man throughout Scripture and Holy Tradition with the bodies of men, albeit glorified and powerful. Of the nine celestial hierarchies, angels are the closest to people and have interacted with them throughout history. The archangels–including the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, the cherubim, and seraphim are the next three. Each order has a particular authority and privilege in communicating God’s glory to creation. This icon, along with the Scripture it references, is a means of remembering and sharing this glory.
