Angel of the Lord (Athos) Icon - S352

Product Description

This detail from a large 16th century fresco features an angel, titled "Angel of the Lord." He is dressed as a deacon, as Psalm 103 describes the angels as "ministering spirits." He holds a royal scepter and orb, representing the authority given to the angels by Christ. This beautiful Athonite icon could be properly venerated as the Guardian Angel. There are an untold number of angels, and among them are the Guardian Angels, which watch over the souls of baptized Christians.

An angel is a messenger of God, and a being which has stood before God and praised Him from a time before human comprehension. We cannot fully grasp what an angel's exact nature is, but we can understand an angel's function on earth. In icons, angels—especially the high-ranking Archangels—are depicted in an earthly form. All the angels are dressed as humans, in clothing accented with gold, the color of holiness and Heaven.

The feast day of all the angelic hosts is November 8.

  1. Great Gift 5 Star Review

Posted by on Jul 4th 2017

I bought this for my Godson, and his mum and dad may have already bought his first icon, but if not, I couldn't think of a better gift. His patron is uncommon so I was leaning toward Christ Blessing the Children, but I am so glad I went with the Angel of the Lord. The photograph just can't convey the *richness* of the colors. The icon is visually soothing as well as (hopefully) something that will remind my godson of his guardian angel every day as he grows older.
